Island Burgers and Shakes came into existence with the realization that there were no restaurants offering a good quality char-boiled burger in the Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood in 1996. Owners Will Brown and Mark Calvino have indeed built a name for themselves, offering truly delicious burgers with some unique twists to their menu.
To commemorate National Cheeseburger day, we went with the “build your own burger,” and created a traditional cheeseburger complete with lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, red onions, and of course American cheese. The patty itself was juicy, well seasoned, and had a nice smokey charred grilled flavor. If you’re feeling adventurous, try customizing your order with seasonings such as spicy Italian or Cajun spice (and many more) along with fun toppings such as guacamole or pesto. Available are also staff picks, which are pre-customized burgers with unique combinations, for instance, the Patty Melt, a burger on toasted rye with Swiss cheese and sautéed onions.
If you take a look at their wall, you’ll discover some fun and helpful tips on how to eat a burger. “The perfect way to hold a hamburger proven by science,” is based off a Japanese TV show called Homma Dekka. The chart advises you to not squeeze too tight, hold the burger with the middle three fingers placed on the top and the pinky and thumb on the bottom. This way of eating optimizes your dining experience that allows for minimal spillage, and maximum bite. Don’t forget to read the wall before eating that burger!
